Our sustainability initiatives
Since 1879, Solberg & Hansen has been concerned with the big picture and we have learnt that we never stop learning. That's why we're constantly looking for new and more sustainable ways to bring you the world's best coffee and tea. Scroll through the timeline to see what specific actions we've taken since 1879.
MONOPLAST
In 2025, we will switch to coffee and tea bags in monoplast. This means that the bags will be made of only one type of plastic, making it easier to recycle the bags and turn them into new products.
The first monoplast bags are already in production, but it's important for us to use up the bags we have first and avoid unnecessary waste.

BIOPROPAN
In January 2025, we became the first speciality coffee roaster to roast coffee with fossil-free biopropane.

SAFER WORKING DAY WITH NEW SILO
Our entire roastery underwent a major upgrade during 2024 when a new and larger coffee silo was installed. The aim of this was to safeguard the working day of our employees and equip Solberg & Hansen for the future.
As a result, our employees in the distillery have a simpler working day with less heavy lifting and a more seamless workflow.
REUSE OF CARDBOARD
No paper packaging goes to waste in our warehouse after we invested in a corrugator. Now, all cardboard is recycled into corrugated cardboard which is used instead of bubble wrap in our mailings to customers.

NEW AND MORE SUSTAINABLE PYRAMID BAG
Our pyramid tea bags have undergone a long and important sustainability journey. From aluminium and plastic packaging, to now being 100 % biodegradable.
Both the envelope and the pyramid bag are made of biodegradable material.

NEW AND BETTER COFFEE AND TEA PACKAGING
At the same time as Solberg & Hansen got an improved profile, our coffee and tea bags also got an upgrade.
From packaging with an aluminium coating on the inside to pure plastic bags that could be recycled as plastic waste.

NITROGEN FLUSHING FOR BETTER DURABILITY
Solberg & Hansen was among the first speciality coffee roasters in Norway to use nitrogen flushing in coffee bags.
This means that when the coffee is finished roasting, it is packed in airtight valve bags and flushed with nitrogen gas to remove excess oxygen from the bag.
This protects the coffee from oxygen and preserves its unique flavours for longer.

DIRECT TRADE
As pioneers in the coffee industry, Solberg & Hansen travelled the world in search of the best coffee lots as early as the 1960s.
Until then, coffee imports had been channelled through European importers.
