About Mama Mina

The Matagalpa region in Nicaragua is often called "The Land of Eternal Spring". This is easy to understand when you see the picturesque Mama Mina plantation. Along lush slopes, the coffee plants grow in straight rows, framed by colorful flowers that break up the overwhelming green landscape. The Mierisch family has been growing coffee here for more than a hundred years. Through a long partnership, we have developed close ties with the family, and from Mama Mina we buy all the Pacamara grown on the farm. Pacamara is a bean that is as demanding to grow as its flavor is complex. The Mierisch family therefore grows the bean type according to our wishes, which means that through Mama Mina we can offer a coffee with a fresh, complex and very characteristic flavor profile.

Tradition and innovation

Mama Mina is a beautiful sight, and the plantation's tidy appearance is reflected in the high quality of the coffee. The farm, which is one of nine plantations owned by the Mierisch family, is named after grandmother Mina McEwan. Erwin Mierisch, who originally trained as an engineer, has been working with coffee since 1994. He has been a key member of the Cup of Excellence for more than ten years, which has given him insight into growing and processing methods far beyond Nicaragua's borders. Erwin has brought this expertise into the family business, and in a balanced interplay between tradition and innovation, Mama Mina always delivers beans of the highest quality.

Flower alert: The combination of warm climate, nutrient-rich soil, large shade trees and rich plant life makes the location of Mama Mina ideal for coffee cultivation. Complemented by knowledge accumulated over generations, cultivation and processing is carried out with the precision and care that the Pacamara bean requires. You might think that the flowers in the picture are planted for aesthetic reasons, but they actually act as a natural warning system against fungal and bacterial attack. Unauthorized organisms attack the flowers before they attack the coffee plants.
